Does it matter how old my tool is?

7/7/2024

It’s not like a fine wine, your tool doesn’t necessarily get better with age!  However, if you’ve had the tool from new or for an extended period, then you would have seen its performance and workload over that period, and have a good knowledge of the tool itself and know it’s strengths and ability to work.

The performance of the tool, to carry out the work required is more important than its age.   Each tool has a model number, and this can help determine the age of your tool if required.

Have you cared for and maintained the tool, have you used it in accordance with the manufacturer’s directions and have you had it regularly serviced or repaired?   These things can make a real difference to the life of your tool.

There’s more than likely to be parts that need to be replaced over a tool’s lifetime due to wear and tear, however a good quality tool cared for and maintained should hopefully have an extended life.  It’s can all start with the purchase of a good quality tool.

Could the power cord be the answer?

18/9/2023

Tools, although designed to last, suffer general wear and tear, and sometimes your tool losses power.   Good tool practices are checking your tools regularly for damage or other issues, caring for them in accordance with the manufacturers guidelines and having them serviced regularly.

The wear of the tool can depend on how the tool is used and the workload of the tool.  Most often it’s the common parts of the tool that will fail and will need repairing or replacing.  Your power cord is part of your tool!

Checking the power cord for nicks, cuts and damage not only saves you or your employee from potential serious harm, it can also indicate power issues that the tool may be experiencing.    If the power supply is correct and the power cord looks in good condition, there may still be some internal wire breakage or damage that needs repairing.   At irepair tools we can repair or replace a power cord where necessary.

Of course if it’s a cordless power tool, then the issue could be the battery.   That’s a discussion for another day.

  • Look for any visible signs of damage to the tool.
  • Wipe the tool down to remove any sawdust, grime and dirt.
  • A clean paintbrush is ideal for getting in those tricky spaces or a bit of air from your air compressor.
  • Inspect power cords for any cuts or damage
  • Check that there are no loose parts
  • Lubricate as appropriate any parts that need greasing and oiling
  • If blades are blunt, arrange to replace them or have them sharpened.

Tool safety

Storing your tools well and in an organised way can extend their life and is good workplace practice for you and your employees.   Keeping tools out of direct sun in the middle of summer, away from the rain in winter any other elements including general debris from the job site will help ensure that the tool does not deteriorate quicker than it should.

Having a system for a quick inspection of the tool before it is put away helps identify if the tools needs any maintenance or repair, and also saves you from frustration when picking up the tool next time if it’s not in a good working order.

See our guide for quick tips on maintaining your tool in our July article.

If you have new or younger employees, ensure that they know and understand the tool, it’s purpose and function, how it is to be handled safely, and an awareness of it’s limitations.    Safety is a priority.
